Reconstruction Era Project

By Andrea Rodríguez

The reconstruction era was a period in American history that started on December 8, 1863 and ended on March 31, 1877. The reconstruction era redefined U.S citizenship and expanded the franchise, alongside with changing the relationship between the federal government and the government of the states.

The North’s reconstruction

The North’s goal
The north was trying to reunify the divided nation.

The northerners experienced an economic boom following the conclusion of the civil war. They achieved many different goals throughout the course of the reconstruction era. Soon, they’ve grown tired of reconstruction after twelve long years.

After the destructive civil war, many United States administrators had to reconstruct society in the former confederate states in particular by establishing and protecting the legal rights of the newly freed black population. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments abolished slavery, granted equal citizenship, and gave voting rights to African Americans.

Achievements
More equitable taxation legislation, the war stimulated the growth of railroads, improving transportation infrastructure,
Failures
The freedman’s bureau failed as it couldn’t carry out all of it’s initiatives and it failed to provide long term protection for blacks or ensure any real measure of racial equality.
